Rüdersdorf, located on the easternmost outskirts of Berlin, is a traditional site of German building materials industry. Surface mining of the limestone deposit, which is the best known in the north German plains, has a history of more than 750 years. Originally, limestone was used in its natural form and was refined by lime burning in the 16th century. In 1885, the production of cement began and since then numerous cement plants have been built in Rüdersdorf.

The CEMEX cement plant in Rüdersdorf features the most modern technology in current cement process engineering. The entire production chain – covering the mining, milling, burning and shipping – is based on modern facilities allowing for the combination of competitive cement production, high energy efficiency, and environmentally friendly production processes. Constant optimization enables the plant to keep up with the development of recent environmental regulations, e.g. the new dust emission limit of 10mg/m³.

The first application of Circulating Fluidized Bed (CFB) technology in combination with a cement kiln is located in the Rüdersdorf cement plant. Using a gasification process, the CFB processes various waste streams to produce lean gas for use as secondary fuel and an inert ash, which serves as a raw material component in the cement production process.
